Feeling So Much Better!

A week or so without any aspartame and I cannot believe how much better I feel. I don't have any more symptoms of withdrawal, but I have to say I've done one naughty thing... I've started drinking regular Mountain Dew! I guess I really miss the taste and I don't like coffee as much. It's a waste of calories though and since I want to see if quitting aspartame helps me lose weight, I have got to stop. I think I will just switch to caffeine pills.

Day 5

Today the nausea was gone! Less pain behind the ribs as well. The headaches remain.
I want to do an actual detox program but since I am reporting on my symptoms, I wanted to make sure none of them were caused by any supplements I might be taking.
This site suggests some supplements that can help with aspartame detox (and also notes the sugar substitute is essentially a poison) - http://www.ehow.com/how_2077034_detox-from-aspartame.html :
  • dandelion
  • milk thistle
  • golden seal and echinacea (to boost immune system)
  • magnesium gluconate
I would like to have a hair analysis done to see exactly what I have been ingesting overall and what my liver has been absorbing.

Day 3/4

Yesterday (day 3) I had a tremendous amount of energy! I woke up feeling pretty refreshed. I did have a recurring headache, however, but it was pretty mild. The pain behind my ribs is still there.

But yesterday afternoon I started getting major DMD cravings. When I walked by the vending machine I was actually really tempted.

Today (day 4) I feel like crap. I woke up feeling OK but around 10 am I got hit by more nausea and then diarrea. I don't feel like I have the flu (no fever) though it is going around.

To be continued... thanks for visiting!

Day 2

Last night I had a perfect night's sleep so I can't blame any symptoms on being exhausted. I'm drinking the same amount of caffeine as well. This morning I had two cups.

On and off all day I've had waves of nausea and dizziness (medium) and in the afternoon I had diarrhea (mild) and headaches (mild). I'm still feeling mild pain behind my ribs (possibly from swollen liver). Around 8 pm I started having difficulty talking. Not physically talking but you know you are really tired and it seems like you can't string together a coherent sentence? That was me and I had to really concentrate to not sound drunk. Bizarre!

Again I had much less of an appetite than two days ago, when I was craving sweets. However, since I woke up early and refreshed, I ate my two eggs. If you didn't know, starting off the day with two eggs (or equivalent protein) kick starts your metabolism and decreases hunger throughout the day.

On to day 3....

Day 1

It's hard to evaluate how I feel today, since I barely slept last night. I slept about 2 hours actually. I had basically two cups of coffee all day.

The good thing about today is I had almost no appetite and didn't feel like snacking. But since I didn't sleep much, I still had a headache. I'm also still feeling pain behind my ribs.

zzzzz more tomorrow...

60 Minutes Report on Aspartame

I'm Addicted to Diet Mountain Dew.

This is my blog in which I will detail my addiction and detox to diet soda, specifically, Diet Mountain Dew. I love the taste and the energy it gives me, without the calories of coffee or regular soda. I typically drink about 1 to 2 liters a day. In the past, I had a test that showed elevated liver enzymes. I stopped drinking diet soda for six months and the tests returned to normal. Unfortunately I went back to drinking it even though I know it's bad for me. I've read up on aspartame, the chemical name for NutraSweet known as diet sugar, and I believe it is causing a number of symptoms:

- exhaustion
- insomnia
- slow metabolism
- swollen liver (pain behind my ribs)
- sugar cravings

As an experiment, I'm going to stop drinking all diet soda but will not make any other lifestyle or diet changes or any significance. Some of these may not be caused in part or at all by aspartame consumption.

Please join me in my journey as I try to find out.
